Cambridge, UK, 24 September 2026 – Ranplan Wireless is delighted to announce that its Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Professor Jie Zhang, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) as part of its 2026 cohort.
Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering recognises outstanding engineers and innovators and their contributions to engineering and technology. Professor Zhang joins a community of more than 1,700 leading engineers and innovators from across academia and industry.
Professor Zhang co-founded Ranplan following years of research into radio propagation and wireless network planning. Together with his students and colleagues, he pioneered research into small cells and heterogeneous networks (HetNets), including the coordination of different network layers and technologies. This research helped shape Ranplan’s approach to combined indoor and outdoor wireless network planning – an area that is becoming increasingly important as private wireless networks are deployed across complex enterprise, campus and industrial environments.
Professor Zhang’s work continues to play an important role in the development of Ranplan’s wireless network planning and simulation technology, while his ongoing research explores emerging areas including artificial intelligence and machine learning, Terahertz communications, non-terrestrial networks and other technologies shaping the evolution towards 6G.

Professor Zhang will be formally admitted to the Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Engineering’s ceremony in London on the 19th October 2026.
